I’ve always been fascinated by the idea of the end of civilisations and eras. Whether in fiction or in the mysterious histories that shroud the downfall of so many former empires, the story of humanity can be read as a series of minor apocalypses. Our ingenuity grows and gathers pace until, blinded by our arrogance, we come undone and the rickety staircase to the stars we’ve built for ourselves crumbles beneath our feet.

In the latter part of 2018, I became increasingly obsessed by climate change. I incessantly read newspaper features and – where I could – scientific articles. Often the latter were beyond my limited understanding, but the picture was, and is, clear: this is our final chance to halt the cycle of societal collapse before it runs away from us. And this time, no new civilisation will rise from the wreckage of the last.

Sleep in Perpetual Storm is my way of channelling and coming to terms with that notion, as well as acknowledging my own complicity in it.

I consider the record to be a two part piece; the first half (tracks 1 – 6) ostensibly dealing with the idea of the collapse and the second (7 – 11) the aftermath.

Despite the depressing, overwhelming nature of these themes, I consider this a hopeful record. Together and apart, we can still effect change in our time.
